Meet Nick Pagan, an artist at Oakland’s Creative Growth Art Center, a non-profit for adult artists with developmental disabilities. The self-professed metalhead is not only known for his drawings, paintings, ceramics, and textiles, but he also builds cardboard drums sets and guitars which he “plays” in short films and at art exhibits. Nick has two words for people who call him a “freak.”

Creative Growth - Dan Miller - Crack The Lightbulb

Dan Miller is one of the most recognized artists of Oakland’s Creative Growth Art Center, the world’s first non-profit art center dedicated to serving adults with developmental disabilities. Using ink and paper, Miller interprets every day subjects into intense, multi-layered ink masses that reflect the artist’s obsession with light bulbs, food, electrical outlets and even people’s names. Miller’s work is in MOMA’s permanent collection.

Creative Growth - Aurie Ramirez Pin Stripe Soup

Artist Aurie Ramirez’s watercolor and ink compositions are often influenced by her love of The Addams Family and the rock band Kiss. Fragments of 18th century dandyism, neo-Victorian decorum, psychedelia, Venetian masquerade, Glam Rock sex and Punk fetishism are expressed in her work which has been shown at White Columns and Gavin Brown’s enterprise in New York, the Jack Hanley Gallery in Los Angeles, ABCD in Paris, and Collection l’Art Brut in Lausanne.
